Alves / Gonçalves
Manuel Alves was born in Montalegre and José Manuel Gonçalves in Abrantes. They started working together in 1984, when they decided to open two stores in Bairro Alto, in Lisbon, selling men’s and women’s collections. In 1985, they exhibited at the Correio Velho Palace and, since then, have been showing their collections regularly. 

In addition to being designers, they worked with industry between 1989 and 1992, creating several brands for national and international markets. In 1993/94 and 95, the two designers presented collections at the Gaudi Showroom in Barcelona, as guests of what was then called ICEP. Their international career also includes being present at SEHM and IGEDO. They have also been invited for campaigns publicising Portuguese fashion in London, Copenhagen and Washington.

They won the Golden Globe for "Fashion Personality” and have designed uniforms for companies such as Vodafone and TAP, as well as costumes for the cinema, theatre and dance. The duo has also developed a line of ceramics and another of jewellery and accessories. In 2008, they designed a stamp for the Portuguese Post Office. 

Between 1991 and 2013, the two designers were also guest professors at the Lisbon Faculty of Architecture, where they lectured on Fashion Design. They have also had shows in Sao Paulo and New York, with the support of Portugal Fashion.
