João Branco and Luís Sanchez set up Storytailors in 2001, after they had finished their fashion design studies at the Lisbon Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture. They joined forces, matured their ideas and decided to create a project with a name-concept that could internationally reflect their way of seeing and working with fashion.
Their passion for history, for stories, for metaphors and their fascination with the construction of clothing, tailoring and fashion turned two English words into one, and that is how story and tailors became Storytailors. Using their research and inspiration, they create and tell stories of the future in a liberating fashion, making them into chapters in each collection. The metaphorical language implicit in each item of clothing is their way of communicating. They advocate the idea of "timeless pieces for timeless fashion”. Their work combines history, the contemporary and the future in timeless designs. Each Storytailors garment is available during the season it was designed for and can be reproduced at any time on request or for special editions.
They present their collections at the national Portugal Fashion events. With the support of Portugal Fashion, the duo has taken part in the Paris Fashion Week five times. Consequently, Storytailors’ garments are a regular feature in the most prestigious national and international media. In 2006, they set up shop in the centre of Lisbon, in Chiado, with a shop and studio on Calçada do Ferragial 8. They have designed wardrobes for musicians The Gift, Amália Hoje, Mísia and Yolanda Soares. They have also designed costumes for the D. Maria II National Theatre and the São João National Theatre.
